I started using “BrokenLyre” as my Internet handle starting back at Old Dominion University while I was obtaining my Bachelor of Music in Music Education. Yeah OK. That means nothing to you does it? I suppose it was around 1995. Yes. That’s back in the day when you had to download a special jpeg viewer in order to look at pictures downloaded from the Internet.
BrokenLyre, obviously a concatenation of the terms “broken” and “lyre,” was adopted following a fraternity initiation. The center point of this initiation ceremony was the reenactment of the life of Orpheus, a Greek mythology musician. Specifically, the play delves into the death of his darling and his attempts to rescue her from Hades. This of course leads to his tragic death after which we come across his lyre with two broken strings.
